Today I looked at an article Mr. Wagoner shared with me: Mini Maglev Train Demonstration – Superconductors, magnetic fields, liquid Nitrogen and a whole load of fun! The article started off by giving a bit of history about the first Maglev patent which was filed and awarded by Alfred Zehden, a German inventor, in 1905.Continue reading “November 10, 2020”

After finding the best options I could for superconductors last week, I contacted Mr. Wagoner and asked if the cheapest kit, which was $77, would be a good cost-friendly option to conduct this experiment with. He said yes but also sent me another option although it didn’t quite fit our experiment: https://www.sargentwelch.com/store/product/8879891/maglev-train-kit After talking withContinue reading “November 9, 2020”

Today was a slow day as I continued to look for superconductors but didn’t make any progress. The best option is the $77 kit which was found yesterday. I did some basic math to figure out the finances and consider which option would work best. I hope to clear this question up next week.

We finally received the pictures from our trip to Consolidated Scrap Resources CSR on October 23 (check the blog)! Throughout the tour, we were not permitted to take pictures; however, our tour guide was kind enough to snap some shots of the facility! Below are some of the pictures and explanations of what is goingContinue reading “November 5, 2020”

Today I tried to tackle the struggle of finding a superconductor. Let me say, it is difficult and they are expensive! I searched the internet as well as amazon and eBay for superconductors or Yttrium barium copper oxide which was used as a superconductor in a video a shared last week (October 27). I cameContinue reading “November 4, 2020”

Today I worked alongside with Mr. Wagoner to determine the type of magnets needed for the experiment as well as finding a superconductor. When looking for magnets, there are certain things to keep in mind such as size, strength, and weight capacity. After doing some basic math, we figured out the size of the trackContinue reading “November 3, 2020”

Goals for the week and the end of the project: ~ Find and purchase magnets and a superconductor ~ Possibly find a metal sheet that is budget friendly so it could be placed under the magnets allowing them to have a surface to stick to rather than lying them on the table with the chanceContinue reading “November 2, 2020”

Yesterday Mr. Wagoner shared with me the video below. It is a great representation of what the final experiment will look like and the engineering and math that is involved in the creation process. From this video I learned that the “steam engine” travels around the track without any friction or motor. In this case,Continue reading “October 30, 2020”

Today was a great day of progress! I met with Mr. Wagoner to discuss the materials that I would need to create the “Cooling Superconductor Experiment”. We looked at different magnets and I realized how expense and small they are. The link below will bring you to the page where we looked at purchasing magnets.Continue reading “October 29, 2020”

Today I took to Amazon to look for the items that I need for the experiment which are: A metal sheet for the magnets to lay on (steel/metal) Neodymium magnets A superconductor It may seem silly, but throughout this whole process I am still unsure about the creation or finding of a superconductor. Knowing thatContinue reading “October 28, 2020”
