Today Morgan and I did a “camp-out” at a four-way stop as part of data collection for the governor’s STEM project. We made it to be our trial run since we came across a few complications. We sat in the parking lot of Klein’s Dental and the only issue was that we were unable to see the sign directly behind it but we were still able to record the amount of cars that came from it. The plan was for Morgan to record the amount of stops each stop sign had and I was to record the length of each stop. I started by using the stopwatch on my phone but quickly got lost as there were too many cars and I couldn’t understand how I’d be able to know every individual cars stop and go times. An obvious problem was that some cars didn’t come to a complete stop and rather than recording them in a separate chart, we added them to the tally from which sign they came from. We went during sixth period from 2-2:35 thinking it wouldn’t be busy but boy were we wrong. We were surprised with the amount of cars that came through that thirty minute window. 161 to be exact! Our next goal is to come up with a revised plan that would solve the problems we came across today and go for round 2.
